Preservation Society of Charleston Announces New Carolopolis Award Category Recognizing Resilience Projects

PRESERVATION SOCIETY OF CHARLESTON ANNOUNCES NEW CAROLOPOLIS AWARD CATEGORY RECOGNIZING RESILIENCE PROJECTS 

CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA – The Preservation Society of Charleston is now accepting nominations for the 69th Carolopolis Awards until September 9, 2022. Through the Carolopolis Award program, the Preservation Society honors the best of preservation in Charleston and the Lowcountry to inspire lasting stewardship of our region’s historic places.

This year, the Preservation Society of Charleston is pleased to announce the introduction of a new Resilience Carolopolis Award categoryto recognize exceptional efforts to sensitively adapt historic properties to changing climate conditions. Resilience Award-winning projects will incorporate creative flood adaptation strategies, while adhering to best practices for historic preservation that retain the character and integrity of the property. Charleston has emerged as a national leader in promoting creative climate adaptations to protect historic structures, and the PSC looks forward to showcasing exemplary projects that set the standard for integrating resilient design with historic preservation.

Until September 9, 2022, the Preservation Society invites homeowners, contractors, architects, and to nominate exceptional projects under the following five award categories:

CAROLOPOLIS AWARD – EXTERIOR: 

Awarded for exceptional exterior rehabilitation, restoration, or preservation.

CAROLOPOLIS AWARD – INTERIOR: 

Awarded in recognition of excellence in interior preservation of historic, publicly accessible buildings, including but not limited to houses of worship, as well as civic and cultural buildings.

CAROLOPOLIS AWARD – NEW CONSTRUCTION

Awarded to bring focus to high-quality, compatible new construction projects within historic contexts. Residential, commercial, and mixed-use buildings are all eligible and must relate to the scale of surrounding, historic buildings.

CAROLOPOLIS AWARD – RESILIENCE:

Awarded to projects that sensitively adapt historic properties to changing climate conditions, while adhering to best practices for historic preservation, and retaining the integrity and character of the structure.

PRO MERITO AWARD: 

Awarded to properties that received a Carolopolis at least 20 years ago and have maintained a high standard of preservation or have undergone a second, significant exterior rehabilitation or restoration.
