Area Character Appraisals
August 27, 2009 - The City of Charleston's Draft Documents of the Area Character Appraisals (ACAs) for the neighborhoods of Cannonborough/Elliottborough, Old Windermere, and Byrnes Downs are now available for review on the City's website (follow the link below). The City of Charleston continues work on a project to complete ACAs for the historic neighborhoods of Cannonborough/Elliottborough on the Charleston peninsula and the Old Windemere and Byrnes Downs neighborhoods west of the Ashley River. Partly funded by a grant from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, Robert and Company of Atlanta, and Glenn Keyes Architects, of Charleston, are the consultants on the project. Charleston’s recently-completed Preservation Plan recommends ACAs be conducted on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis in order to define an existing area by “focusing on the unique character, architectural style, building forms, landscape resources, and cultural resources that make up the streetscapes and blocks.” Two public workshops were held in February — one for Cannonborough/Elliottborough, and one for the neighborhoods of Old Windermere and Byrnes Downs. The workshops were well-attended and allowed for a presentation of the initial findings by the consultant team as well as a forum for citizens’ input and knowledge about the neighborhoods. Public comments are available by following the link below to the City of Charleston's website. Downloadable files of the Draft ACAs for each neighborhood are also available on the City's website.
